And I’ve seen a big difference in the quality of photos and in engagement from the community in the past 18 months since SmugMug took over.įor me, the pro account is totally worth it. SmugMug seems committed to keeping Flickr alive and thriving. It’s going to be nearly impossible for people to find your work without you sending them a link.īut honestly, I don’t think Flickr is going anywhere. The cons are that it can be costly for quality, it’s a lot more work to build and near constant work to maintain, and the only community will be the people you bring there. The pro is that you’ll be able to customize your site pretty well. Squarespace and Wix and even SmugMug offer portfolio websites. If you just want a place where you can send people to see your best photos, you might consider just making a personal website. If you get into a community’s followers, they could be all over the map in terms of what kind of content they post and follow. Tumblr: has (or had) better community than IG or 500px with the potential for deeper engagement, but it’s not a community specifically for/about photographers.
It’s a pay service, but there’s not much bang for your buck, IMO. Their copyright agreement is a big turn-off for me. Good place to see quality images, but it’s very static without a community to engage with your photos. The user base on IG are mostly casual photographers and wannabe influencers.ĥ00px: it’s a decent service with some features that I like, but there’s no community there. IG compresses photos, limits sizes, doesn’t allow the kinds of sharing, printing, and album options that Flickr has. People usually take one look, maybe heart it, maybe not, then keep on scrolling and forget about your photo. Instagram: nobody really engages with your photos there. Here are some alternatives and why I do t think they’re worth it: The main thing that set Flickr apart from all the other sites and services is the community of photographers. I haven’t found anything else online like Flickr. So yeah, not sure what other people think Imgur similarly I feel just has too much other stuff on it for me to feel happy using it to host what I consider my favorite photos. So any thoughts or suggestions on other services to look into? I personally don't like instagram for this since they tend to crop photos and it doesn't look good on a computer.

It takes a bit of time to either download all the photos or find all the photos again on my computer so I rather not completely abandon ship but like I said I don't really want to support something that'll be dead soon anyways.
I'm considering upgrading to a pro account to help out the company, because I do really like the site, but I'm worried that I'll create a pro account and the website will go out of business in a year, and I could've started using and supporting another site instead. I've used the site for years not really as a backup, but for a place to say "this is where you can look at the photos I think are the best I've taken". Hi! So after seeing the holiday email that went out from flickr, I'm a bit concerned for them as a company.
